How to become a Forward Deployed Engineer

To become a Forward Deployed Engineer, get fluent building with AI, then do one real deployment end to end: find a problem in a real business, design and ship a system that fixes it, measure the before and after, and write it up as a case study. Hiring teams want to see that deployment.

Place yourself on the AI skill ladder

The FDE seat is rung 4: using AI to help other people with their problem, their context, and a result they can use. Most engineers sit between rungs 1 and 2.

  1. Can you make AI work for you, beyond autocomplete?
  2. Do you understand what it's doing, where it works, and where it doesn't yet?
  3. Are you improving your usage, treating AI as a skill you practice?
  4. Can you use AI to help other people, with their problem, their context, and a result they can use?

Days 1–30: Master the machine, find a real problem

In the first thirty days, get fluent with context engineering, tool calling, and agentic loops, then run discovery on a real business problem and write one page on how the process works today, what it costs, and what metric would prove it fixed.

Build small things that work, every day. Look at your company, a local business, or a friend's team. Interview the people who feel the pain.

Days 31–60: Design it, build it, put it in someone's hands

In days 31 to 60, write an architecture doc rooted in the metric the pain point should move, build the smallest v1 that ships, and get a real person using it for real work as soon as possible.

Measure the before and after so you can point to the impact with a number.

Days 61–90: Harden it, write it up, reposition

In days 61 to 90, harden the system with evals, fallbacks, access control, and a rollout plan that would pass a security review, write it up as a client-style case study, and reposition your resume around outcomes.

Write case studies the way an FDE reports to a client: problem, design, what broke, measured outcome. Your resume and LinkedIn should lead with outcomes. The stack goes underneath. Run two plays at once: apply to FDE roles at AI-native companies, and pitch your current company on making you the person who deploys AI internally.

Where people stall

People stall on three points: finding a real problem through discovery, over-engineering in the middle month when they should ship, and underselling the write-up so the resume still reads like a pure engineer.

  1. Finding a real problem. Discovery feels uncomfortable, so people avoid it. It's supposed to feel that way.
  2. The middle month. Building is the comfort zone, so people over-engineer instead of getting the system into someone's hands.
  3. The write-up. People undersell the result with a resume that still reads like a pure engineer.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to become a Forward Deployed Engineer?

The path laid out here is structured as ninety days for a working engineer: a month to get fluent with AI and find a real problem, a month to design and ship a measured system, and a month to harden it, write it up, and reposition. Timelines vary with your starting point and how fast you get real users.

Can I become an FDE without a customer-facing job?

Yes. You can find a real problem at your own company, a local business, or a friend's team, interview the people who feel it, and deploy a fix. That end-to-end deployment gives you the discovery and stakeholder experience FDE interviews look for.

What should an FDE portfolio include?

A deployed system someone uses for real work, the one-page discovery write-up, an architecture doc tied to a business metric, evaluation results with a measured before-and-after, and a case study written the way an FDE reports to a client: problem, design, what broke, and outcome.
